Calgary Fire Crews Respond to 2 Alarm High Rise Fire in the Beltline

At approximately 3:30 pm today, Calgary Fire Department (CFD) crews responded to reports of a high rise balcony fire on 15th Avenue and 8th Street SW.

Upon arrival, fire crews faced significant smoke and flames from an exterior 4th floor balcony. Firefighters quickly extended hose lines to control the fire from the exterior while crews gained access to the interior to control fire spread and extension. Aerial ladder trucks were staged on standby in order to provide an elevated master stream if needed.

A second alarm was called in order to ensure adequate resources were available on scene.

A number of residents self-evacuated prior to CFD’s arrival. Other residents were instructed to shelter in place due to the flame spread being mostly limited to the exterior. AHS attended the incident but no injuries to civilians or emergency workers were reported. CPS provided scene security and crowd and traffic control.

Damage consisted of several suites suffering water and smoke damage. Exterior damage due to flame and smoke spread also occurred. Building management and a restoration company are on scene managing residents’ needs including those who will be displaced.

The fire is out at this time.

A fire investigator is currently on scene in order to complete his investigation and determine a cause.
