Calgary fire crews rescue man from south east house fire

At approximately 8:45 this morning, 9-1-1 received a call regarding a house fire at the corner of 45 Street and 19 Avenue S.E. An elderly couple residing there was alerted to the fire in the kitchen by their smoke alarm. The woman ran outside to get help and a couple driving by stopped and called 9-1-1 for her.

Upon being told that there was still someone in the house, the driver of the vehicle then attempted to enter the house, however there was too much smoke and he had to turn back. When fire crews arrived, they immediately entered the residence and rescued the man. He was then transferred to EMS for assessment and transport to an area hospital.

Fire crews quickly extinguished the fire and searched for hot spots. There is significant fire damage to the kitchen and smoke damage throughout the home. A Calgary Fire Department fire investigator is on scene to determine the exact origin and cause of the fire.

A fire crew remains on scene to do fire watch and assist the fire investigator.
