Calgary fire crews called to roof fire on Shepard Road S.E.

At approximately 4 p.m. on Monday afternoon, Calgary fire crews were called to an industrial building on Shepard Road S.E. for reports of a possible fire. The business's monitoring company called 9-1-1 to alert the fire department to the activation of the building's fire alarm system.

When fire crews arrived at the large manufacturing warehouse, they found fire on the roof with extension to the inside at the ceiling level. This caused smoke to build up inside the building. Firefighters quickly knocked down the flames, looked for further extension of fire and put out hotspots.

All 25 employees safely evacuated the building and no injuries were reported as a result of the fire.

The building, approximately 52, 000 square feet in size, was filled with smoke and needed to be ventilated. The Calgary Fire Department has a specialized high capacity fan which is very useful for ventilating large buildings efficiently. The fan is close to four feet in diameter and is powered by a 115 horse power motor. The fan was utilized for this incident to remove smoke from the building.

A Calgary Fire Department fire investigator was on the scene and although the fire is still under investigation, the cause does not appear to be suspicious.
