Calgary fire crews battle three alarm fire in Bankview

Just before 4:30 on Friday afternoon on December 20th, 9-1-1 started receiving multiple calls reporting a fire on the roof area of a five story residential building located at the 1400 block of 23 Avenue South West. Callers reported seeing flames and thick dark smoke.

The first responding fire crew quickly called a second alarm for additional resources which was then upgraded to a third alarm shortly thereafter.  The fire alarm system in the 56 unit complex was activated by someone in the building and an evacuation was initiated. No injuries have been reported thus far from residents or firefighters.

As of 10:00 p.m., fire crews were still actively fighting this difficult and challenging fire.  Firefighters are expected to be on scene throughout the night. Utilities to the building have been shut off to reduce the risk to the fire crews.  Calgary Transit busses were brought to the scene to provide temporary shelter until residents were able to make other arrangements. Calgary Police Service officers and Calgary Emergency Management representatives were also on scene to assist.

Due to the size of the fire and extent of the damage, it is expected that residents will not be able to return to the building for some time. Residents are urged to contact their insurer as soon as possible and to make plans to stay with family or friends. The Red Cross may also be of assistance. The property manager will be sending out regular updates via email to all residents.

Calgary Fire investigators are on scene to start the investigation as to the origin and cause of this devastating fire. Anybody who has video, photos or information regarding this fire especially prior to CFD arrival on scene, please email piofire@calgary.ca

The Calgary Fire Department thanks all callers to 9-1-1 for their quick and detailed reports.
