Calgary Fire Crews Battle Early Morning Townhouse Fire in Montgomery

At approximately 03:40 in the morning of Tuesday, December 21, 9-1-1 started receiving multiple calls for reports of heavy dark smoke coming from the carport next to a townhouse located at the 4500 block of Montgomery Avenue N.W. One caller stated she heard a loud bang, then ran to the window and saw a lot of smoke coming from the carport attached to one of the townhouse units.

When fire crews arrived on scene, heavy smoke and flames were visible. A second alarm was called for additional resources. 11 residents were evacuated from the building’s four units and Calgary Transit busses were brought in to shelter the evacuees. ATCO and Enmax were called to the scene to disconnect the utilities to the one building where the fire started and a sanding truck has also been called to sand icy sections of streets in the area. Calgary Police Officers are also on scene assisting.

No injuries have been reported thus far and fire crews continue working hard to extinguish hotspots. Firefighters are also retrieving valuables for residents where possible and safe to do so. Damage to three units is severe with significant smoke damage to the fourth unit.

A Calgary Fire Department Fire Investigator is on the scene to determine the origin and cause of this fire. If anybody has any information, photos or video of the fire, especially prior to fire crews’ arrival on scene, please email piofire@calgary.ca
