Calgary fire crews battle basement fire on Elbow Drive

Shortly before 5:00 this evening, 9-1-1 received calls to report a basement fire in a single family home at the 7100 block of Elbow Drove S.W. The first arriving fire crews saw smoke coming from the basement of the home. Upon entering the basement, firefighters were met with significant flames and smoke.

Initial reports indicated that there were six people in the house however after gathering further information on the residents, it was determined that a family of four and and their guest were home at the time the fire was discovered. They all quickly evacuated without injury when they noticed smoke coming from the basement.

Fire crews quickly got the fire under control. Fire damage is limited to the basement with smoke damage throughout the home. It is unclear if there were working smoke alarms in the house. No injuries were reported as a result of this fire and a fire investigator is on scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire.

Traffic in both directions on Elbow Drive between 69 and 75 Avenue was completely shut down and rerouted by CPS. At approximately 6:30 p.m.,two southbound and one northbound lane where opened up to resume traffic flow in the area. Fire crews remain on scene at this time.
