Building Fire in Forest Lawn Shop

At approximately 1000 this morning the Calgary Fire Department responded to a working fire in the 1800 block of 54th street in the southeast community of Forest Lawn. While in the district, fire apparatus witnessed a large volume of smoke in the vicinity and responded to the location. On arrival, crews were met with heavy smoke conditions and flame from a large commercial occupancy. Employees met arriving apparatus and directed firefighters into the location. One occupant had burns and was treated by crews on scene and transported by Alberta Health Services (AHS) to hospital. All other occupants self-evacuated and were uninjured and accounted for.

Crews quickly deployed hose lines and brought the fire under control. The fire was confined to the building of origin and none of the other buildings on site were impacted. Damage to the source building was extensive due to smoke and fire. Both Atco and Enmax assisted on scene with control of utilities and Calgary Police Service assisted with control of the scene perimeter.

The cause of the fire is currently under investigation and crews will be on scene for the next several hours.
