Ban Lifted on Bow River Only

The Vessel Operation Restriction enacted by Calgary Police Service and River Boating Advisory put in place by the Calgary Fire Department have been lifted for the Bow River only as of 9 a.m. today, Tuesday, July 16, 2013. However, extreme caution is still required.

 

CFD and CPS would like to remind Calgarians that although water levels have dropped, conditions on the Bow River continue to be dangerous and pose a considerable risk for anyone on the river in any type of watercraft. Due to the recent flooding, there have been significant changes to the stability of riverbanks, increasing the danger of being on or near them. Debris in the water poses an extreme hazard and water clarity is low, obscuring hazards and obstacles just below the surface.

 

Bow River users will need to familiarize themselves with the altered river channels, as previous river knowledge may no longer be relevant. Substantial changes in the river will necessitate the need and ability to react quickly in order to navigate hazards. Use caution in and around Harvie Passage as conditions have not allowed for an assessment to be completed. Please use the portage on ‘River Right’ to exit the water as river channels have dramatically changed in this area.

 

Due to very dangerous conditions created by a variety of debris, the Vessel Operation Restriction enacted by the CPS will remain in place for the Elbow River. Boating remains prohibited on this river within the city limits at this time.

 

It is safest to stay away from river banks and avoid going in or near the water, especially with children and pets. Should you choose to use the Bow River, please exercise extreme caution and take the time to understand and plan for the risks.
