Alberta’s Lieutenant Governor awards firefighters with Exemplary Service Medals

Today, the Calgary Fire Department had the honour of assisting the Lieutenant Governor of Alberta, the Minister Municipal Affairs and the Alberta Office of the Fire Commissioner in recognizing more than 65 firefighters from across southern Alberta for their exemplary commitment to the fire service.

“The Exemplary Service Medal acknowledges Alberta firefighters for their outstanding contribution to public safety,” said Greg Weadick, Alberta Minister of Municipal Affairs. “Alberta is fortunate to have a dedicated group of individuals who stand on guard to protect our communities and our province.”

Of the 67 invited honourees from southern Alberta, eleven are from the Calgary Fire Department. The ceremony, one of two in the province, is held annually to award both full-time and volunteer firefighters from across southern Alberta for 20 years of exemplary service.

“Firefighting requires bravery, dedication, hard work and an unwavering commitment to the safety of those you serve,” said Fire Chief Bruce Burrell. “Above and beyond these characteristics, the Exemplary Service Medals require good conduct, industry and efficiency. This is a medal that truly symbolizes exceptional service to our country, one that firefighters should be proud of.”

The Fire Services Exemplary Service Medals were established in 1985 by Her Majesty The Queen. The silver medal is embossed with a Maltese cross, crossed axes, and a fire hydrant against a maple leaf background and is held by a gold and red ribbon.
