Police increasing user fees to maintain efficient service to Calgarians

User fees for some services offered by the Calgary Police Service will be increasing in order to maintain efficient service to the citizens of Calgary.

“Our city has been experiencing economic hardship for the past few years and the Calgary Police Service wants to help get citizens get back to work faster,” said Amanda Welfare, manager of the Police Business Operations Section. “For some positions, having a timely employment police information check is crucial to ensure candidates have the best opportunities to seek employment.”

User fees for employment police information checks will increase from the current $30 to $55, effective Monday, April 1, 2019.

“We haven’t increased fees for more than 10 years and we’ve seen a steady increase in the number of requests we receive. From 2015 to 2017 alone, we saw a nearly eight per cent increase in the requests without increased resources,” said Welfare. “The employment police information checks fee increase will maintain a turnaround time of 10 business days as the Service increases the number of positions available to process these requests. Otherwise, the processing time for these checks could increase to between 15 to 20 business days.”

The fees associated with record suspension police information checks, occurrence summary reports and collision reconstruction reports are also increasing. User fees for volunteer police information checks will remain the same at $15.

“All the new fees and processing times are in line with other national policing agencies and Calgarians will still pay less for these services than most other jurisdictions,” said Welfare.

By increasing revenue through raising fees for these services, CPS can address its current challenges and meet public and business expectations without asking City Council for a budget increase.
