Helping Calgarians navigate construction season

With construction season kicking off in Calgary, The City is working to help you get around, whether you walk, wheel, take transit or drive.

This year there are a number of investments being made into our infrastructure, our roads and to vital supports like flood mitigation and utilities. As a winter city, most of this work needs to happen during our short, weather-dependent construction season.

"A lot of important work happens in our city during the spring and summer, " says Troy McLeod, The City’s Director of Mobility. “Our goal is to minimize disruptions and ensure the safety and accessibility of our transportation network. We work diligently to keep traffic flowing as smoothly as possible while construction is underway."

Working behind the scenes to keep you on the move

“Calgarians should know that behind the scenes, we’re doing a lot to coordinate and manage traffic," says McLeod. "Before a closure or detour is approved, like the work on the 4 Avenue Flyover Rehabilitation, The City reviews the plan, examines traffic data, and considers the impacts to how people and businesses may be affected.”

Some of the factors considered are safety, emergency access, busiest travel times, how pedestrians and cyclists move through the area, and how long the work will take to complete.

Throughout construction season and year-round, The City’s Mobility Operations Centre (MOC) actively monitors and responds to real-time traffic conditions, including impacts of construction and things like weather, incidents and other unplanned events. They use advanced technologies like dynamic road signs, traffic cameras, traffic signal timing and lane reversals to alleviate congestion and keep traffic flowing smoothly.

Know your options and plan ahead

“Traffic conditions can change regularly,” says McLeod. “It’s a good idea to get in the habit of planning ahead, either by using a trip-planning app, detour and closure signs, or some of the many tools we offer that have real-time information and a look ahead at planned detours.”
