Drug trafficking charges laid following community concerns

The Calgary Police Service has charged two individuals following a tip from the public about alleged drug activity occurring at a residence in Forest Lawn.

In April 2019, police received information from community members that drug activity was allegedly occurring within a residence located in the 2400 block of 48 Street S.E.

Police began investigating and quickly observed activity believed to be consistent with drug trafficking.

On Tuesday, May 7, 2019, officers executed a search warrant on the residence, which resulted in nine people being taken into custody. As a result of the search, police seized a small amount of methamphetamine, cocaine, fentanyl and psilocybin. Other items seized included a knife, bear spray and a machete.

Dijon SYMONDS-GILBERT, 29, of Calgary, has been charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance, one count of possession of property obtained by crime and three counts of failing to comply with a recognizance. He will next appear in court on Friday, May 17, 2019.

Destiny Maria CHRISTIAN, 19, of Calgary, has been charged with three counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking and one count of possession of property obtained by crime. She will next appear in court on Wednesday, May 22, 2019.

Four other people who were taken into custody were arrested on outstanding warrants, and three individuals were released without charges.

This investigation was initiated as a result of the ongoing work of the Daylight Initiative to address the exponential growth of methamphetamine in our city. CPS is committed to proactively combatting drug trafficking.

“While the amount of drugs seized during this investigation may seem minimal, we expect these charges to have a great impact on the community,” says Detective Matt Hinchey of the CPS District 4 General Investigations Unit. “We want the public to feel safe living and raising a family in their own communities and we encourage anyone experiencing suspicious or criminal activity in their neighbourhood to reach out to us.”

Police would like to thank Alberta Sheriff investigators from the Safer Communities and Neighbourhoods (SCAN) unit for their assistance during this investigation.

Anyone with information on the trafficking of drugs is asked to contact the police non-emergency number, 403-266-1234, or Crime Stoppers anonymously using any of the following methods:
