The City offering $3,000 rebate for the installation of impact-resistant roofing in new program

The City of Calgary is offering a $3,000 rebate for homeowners who experienced hail damage in 2020, and installed, or plan to install, impact-resistant roofing.

“Calgary routinely experiences hailstorms in the spring and summer months, and last year we had one of the most devastating storms in history,” said George Chahal, Councillor, Ward 5. “The rebate program is one way we can help Calgarians make the switch to impact-resistant materials that can withstand more extreme weather events.”

On May 10, Council approved the Resilient Roofing Rebate program which incentivizes upgrades from standard roofing products to impact-resistant products to protect homes from severe weather damage.

The City will start accepting applications for the rebate program on June 1, 2021. Homeowners must have evidence of hail damage from 2020, must replace their roof with a Class 4 rated roofing system, and must use a contractor who is a member of the Alberta Allied Roofing Association or Alberta Roofing Contractors Association. The rebate can be applied retroactively to eligible properties that had impact-resistant roofing installed between June 13, 2020 and June 1, 2021.

In January 2022, the program eligibility will expand and will accept applications from homeowners who replaced their roof (after June 1, 2021), or plans to replace their roof with a certified Class 4 impact-resistant product.

"As we get into construction season, we recommend homeowners work with their insurance agency, or approved roofing contractor, on learning more about impact-resistant roofing,” says Kris Dietrich, coordinator, Customer Solutions.
