Finding Maple: A Story of Second Chances and Unbreakable Bonds
Maple wasn’t the dog Kory and his family were looking for—because they weren’t looking for a dog at all. But sometimes the right dog finds you anyway.
For two weeks, a fluffy German Shepherd–Australian Cattle Dog mix was spotted wandering through the neighbourhood, dodging cars, evading capture, and slowly stealing hearts. Community Safety Peace Officers responded multiple times to try and bring her to safety. Eventually, she was caught in a humane trap after suffering a broken leg—injured but still full of fight.
“She’d been on the loose for a while,” Kory recalls. “I decided that if no one stepped forward to take her, I would.”
The family contacted Calgary Animal Services and followed Maple’s recovery. “We weren’t even looking for another dog,” Kory said, “but something about her was special.” When they finally visited the shelter, they brought their resident dog along to meet her. It was a bit overwhelming at first—for everyone—but by the second visit the next day, the two dogs were getting along. On day three, Maple went home.
She didn’t respond to any name, except one: “Maple” was the first name she listened to. And it stuck.
Since then, Maple has quickly become a beloved member of her new family. “She loves people and wants to please. She’s got a bubbly personality, but she also likes to work. If you throw a ball, she’ll make it her mission to bring it back.”
She’s smart, routine-driven, and just a little anxious at bedtime. Although, her anxiety seemed to lighten up ever since she started to take her ball to bed. One thing the family needs to be cautious of: Maple can open doors, so they now have to keep doors locked so she can’t break through.
Maple’s new life is full of dog parks, playtime, and unconditional love. “We’re outside more, we walk more, we go to the park more. It’s changed us a lot.”
When asked what they’d say to someone considering adopting from the Animal Services Centre, her family doesn’t hesitate: “Definitely go for it. These dogs have so much to offer—they seem to be really appreciative. Maple’s a total velcro dog. She’s always close by.”
They also had high praise for the Animal Services staff. “They were really helpful and made sure Maple was the right fit. It didn’t feel rushed. They care about the dogs, and it shows.”
Maple may have started her story on the streets, but thanks to the dedication of Animal Services and one family’s open heart, she’s now right where she belongs—home.
