City Hall memorial arson investigation results in charges

A man has been arrested and charged in relation to an arson that occurred at the residential school memorial at City Hall in August.

Just before 11:30 p.m., on Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2021, City of Calgary Corporate Security observed a man through CCTV as he appeared to attempt to light the memorial on fire before fleeing. Security officers extinguished the fire and called for assistance. Police and the Calgary Fire Department quickly responded to the memorial where it was discovered several shoes and other objects were heavily damaged.

Thanks to tips from the public following two media releases seeking assistance from the public to identify a man seen in CCTV, investigators were able to identify and locate the suspect.

We have decided not to release the name of the accused on compassionate grounds as he is a vulnerable person experiencing some mental health and medical challenges that are believed to have contributed to his actions.
