Homicide Unit investigating serious assault

The Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit is investigating a serious assault that occurred earlier this afternoon.

At approximately 2 p.m., today, Thursday, July 18, 2019, police officers driving in the 3500 block of 32 Avenue N.E., were flagged down by a citizen seeking help for a man in medical distress who was located in the south end of the Whitehorn Safeway parking lot, near the gas station. Officers pulled over and provided first aid. The man, in his 40s, was taken to hospital by EMS, where his condition has since deteriorated to life threatening.

It is believed the man's injuries are the result of a serious assault. Due to the deterioration of the man's condition, the Homicide Unit is now investigating with assistance from detectives in the General Investigations Unit.

The investigation is in the early stages and police remain on scene in the area. At this time, no suspect descriptions are available.

Police are looking to speak with anyone who was in the area of the parking lot this afternoon and may have witnessed the assault or suspicious activity leading up to the assault. Given the time this occurred, it is believed that there were many citizens in the area who may have witnessed something and have yet to speak with police.
