Witnesses sought in serious-injury collision with tow truck operator

Investigators with the Calgary Police Service Traffic Section are seeking witnesses of a serious-injury collision involving a tow truck operator, as well as anyone who may have seen the offending vehicle leading up to the collision.

On Wednesday, June 16, 2021, at approximately 5:45 a.m., police were called to the collision in the 5700 block of 11 Street N.E. Leading up to the collision, a tow truck was parked southbound on 11 Street N.E., while working to conduct a recovery of a broken-down vehicle.

A black, 2017 Subaru Legacy, driven by a 28-year-old man, was travelling southbound on 11 Street N.E., and approached the tow truck. The tow truck operator, a 45-year-old man, was outside of the truck performing his duties when he was struck by the Subaru and was pinned between the vehicles as the Subaru collided with the tow truck.

The tow truck operator was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition. He remains in serious but stable condition this morning.

The Subaru driver was treated at the scene by EMS and transported to hospital for precautionary reasons.

Driver impairment is being investigated as a possible factor in this collision. Anyone who was in the area at the time, or who may have seen the Subaru leading up to the collision, is asked to contact police.

“Tow truck drivers and emergency workers deserve safe working conditions while they get you the help you need, when you need it. As a driver, it is your duty to ensure the safety of those around you while on the road. Slow down, move over, watch out for us and each other," says Sgt. Colin Foster of the CPS Traffic Section.

Anyone with information about this collision is asked to contact the police non-emergency number 403-266-1234, or Crime Stoppers anonymously through any of the following methods:
