Update: Police looking for second vehicle in fatal pedestrian collision

Our Traffic Unit continues to investigate a fatal pedestrian collision that occurred in the community of Forest Heights on the weekend. After further investigation, we are looking to speak with the driver of a second vehicle, who may have information in relation to the collision.

At approximately 12:20 a.m., on Saturday, May 18, 2024, a man in his 70s was walking north along 47 Street S.E. in a marked crosswalk, crossing Memorial Drive S.E.

At the same time, a black BMW X5 was travelling east along Memorial Drive S.E. approaching 47 Street S.E., and struck the man, who was ultimately declared deceased at the scene.

The driver fled prior to police arrival and continued travelling east before abandoning the vehicle. Police located the vehicle a short time later.

After reviewing evidence from the scene and speaking with witnesses, it is believed that just prior to the collision, a white sedan was travelling beside the black BMW. Investigators are looking for assistance from the public to identify the driver of the white sedan.

“While we are still reviewing evidence in this case, it appears that the BMW involved in the collision was overtaking the white sedan moments prior to striking the pedestrian,” says Sgt. Colin Foster of the CPS Collision Reconstruction Unit. “We believe the driver of the white sedan may have crucial information for our investigation.”

We are also looking for anyone who has information about the collision or dashcam footage from the area to come forward.

Anyone who has information is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers through any of the following methods:
