Police investigate fatal hit-and-run collision

Our Traffic Unit continues to investigate after a pedestrian was struck and killed earlier this morning in the southeast community of Forest Heights.

At approximately 12:20 a.m., today, Saturday, May 18, 2024, a man in his 70s was walking northbound along 47 Street S.E. in a marked crosswalk, crossing Memorial Drive S.E.

At the same time, an SUV was travelling eastbound along Memorial Drive S.E. approaching 47 Street S.E., and struck the man, who was ultimately declared deceased at the scene.

The driver fled prior to police arrival and continued travelling eastbound before abandoning the vehicle. Police located the vehicle a short time later and are continuing to search for the driver. 

Excessive speed is being investigated as a factor in this collision.
