Update: Police investigate single-vehicle collision on Deerfoot Trail southeast

The driver of a vehicle involved in a serious-injury collision that occurred last week in the city’s southeast has died.

On Sunday, Aug. 17, 2025, at approximately 1:25 p.m., a 2010 Cobra, operated by a man in his 50s, was travelling southbound on Deerfoot Trail S.E.

As the vehicle approached the overpass for Seton Boulevard S.E., the lanes reduced, and the vehicle began to travel on the righthand shoulder of the roadway.

The vehicle then struck a temporary sign for road construction, before striking the cable fence separating traffic from the Seton Boulevard S.E. ramp.

The vehicle continued on the grassy median and the driver was ejected from the vehicle. He sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital, where he later died.

So far this year, 25 fatal collisions have occurred on Calgary’s roads, including five fatal motorcycle collisions. 

“Road safety is everyone’s responsibility,” says Inspector Kurt Jacobs of the Calgary Police Service Traffic Section. “In 2024, 29 fatal collisions occurred in Calgary and unfortunately, this year, we are on track to meet or surpass that number. Together, law enforcement, community partners and Calgarians can help ensure everyone returns home at the end of the day. Slowing down, watching for pedestrians, motorists and cyclists, and driving according to the road and weather conditions, are all part of keeping people safe.”
