Update #1: Police investigate suspicious death in South Airways

We initially reported this incident occurred in the community of Vista Heights and we wish to correct that to South Airways. We apologize for the inconvenience that may have caused.

The victim of a fatal shooting that occurred over the weekend in the northeast community of South Airways has now been identified.

Following an autopsy completed today, Monday, July 22, 2024, by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, we have now identified the victim as 19-year-old Jordan LEINEN, of Calgary.

At approximately 6 p.m., on Saturday, July 20, 2024, police were called to the Foothills Medical Centre, located at 1403 29 Street N.W., for reports of two victims who had arrived suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. Upon arrival, one woman was declared deceased, and a 17-year-old male was in serious condition. He has since been upgraded to stable condition.

It is believed the shooting took place at approximately 5:20 p.m., as the victims were travelling westbound on the 32 Avenue N.E. overpass above Deerfoot Trail, in a white 2008 Acura MDX. It is believed an unknown vehicle(s) approached the Acura and fired several rounds into the vehicle injuring the two occupants, prior to them attending the hospital.

Investigators believe this was not a random incident, however, the target was not believed to be the homicide victim.

Police continue to seek information from the public in relation to this incident and are asking anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage from the area or who may have witnessed suspicious behaviour around the time of the incident to come forward to police.

“We are looking to speak to anyone who may have information about this incident. Any piece of information big or small, may have a significant impact on this investigation,” says Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit. “A young woman lost her life, and a family is now left without their loved one. This type of violence will not be tolerated in our city, and we are putting several resources from across the Service into investigating this incident.”

This is Calgary's 10th homicide of 2024.
