Update – Homicide investigation in Sunalta

Our Homicide Unit continues to investigate a fatal shooting in Sunalta, which marks our city’s first recorded homicide of 2022.

At approximately 3:20 p.m., on Thursday, Jan. 6, 2022, we were called to the 1200 block of 17 Street S.W., for reports that a man had been shot. Upon arrival, officers located a man in a back alley suffering from what appeared to be a gunshot wound. Despite officers and paramedics performing life-saving efforts, the victim was pronounced deceased on scene.

An autopsy was completed by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, which identified the victim as 36-year-old Eric RIENDEAU, of Calgary. It is believed that the victim was targeted.

Investigators are searching for a suspect vehicle described as a small black or dark grey SUV, that may have frequented the area.

The investigation is ongoing and 12 Avenue S.W., between 17 Street S.W. and 18 Street S.W., continues to be shut down, as well as an alley south and parallel to 12 Avenue S.W.
