Two charged in assault involving an edged weapon and a vehicle

A man and a woman have been charged following a violent altercation that occurred in the early morning hours downtown yesterday.

Around 4 a.m., on Monday, June 24, 2024, a verbal altercation occurred between a group of individuals walking in the area of Dermot Baldwin Way S.E. When someone within the group deployed bear spray, a man and a woman left the group heading towards their parked vehicle nearby. As they walked away, they were approached from behind by two women, one of whom used an edged weapon to strike the female victim in the head. The two victims of the attack got into their vehicle, returned to Dermot Baldwin Way, allegedly driving at and striking the two previous assailants. The vehicle then fled westbound onto Fifth Avenue S.E.

The occupants of the vehicle drove to a nearby medical facility for treatment of their injuries. Police believe other people may have been affected by the hit-and-run and are looking to speak to anyone who was involved.

The driver, Paris Samuel APPENHEIMER, 43, has been charged with dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and was released from custody pending his next court date on Wednesday, July 31, 2024.

The suspect who used the edged weapon was arrested and transported to hospital for injuries sustained when they were struck by the vehicle. Chekesha GEORGE, 24, has been charged with assault with a weapon and breach of probation. She will next appear in court today, Tuesday, June 25, 2024.
