The City mails 2019 Assessment Notices and begins the Customer Review Period

Today, The City of Calgary mailed the 2019 assessment notices to approximately half a million property owners and commenced the 2019 Customer Review Period which runs from Jan. 3 to March 12, 2019.

The total value of the 2019 assessment roll is $306 billion. The typical residential property market value change from the previous year is minus one per cent and the typical non-residential market value change is minus 12 per cent.

  • The 2019 median single residential assessment is $475,000 compared to $480,000 in 2018.
  • The 2019 median residential condominium assessment is $255,000 compared to $260,000 in 2018.

“Overall, we’re seeing stable property values for single residential and a minimal decrease in property values for condominiums,” said Nelson Karpa, City Assessor.

The 2019 property assessment values are based on a July 1, 2018 market valuation date and a Dec. 31, 2018 physical condition date. The assessed values, which provide the basis for determining property taxes, are prepared annually by The City of Calgary as mandated by the Municipal Government Act.

The 2019 Customer Review Period provides property owners with the opportunity to review and ensure the accuracy of their 2019 assessment and learn more about Calgary’s assessment process.

“We are committed to delivering fair and equitable assessments and have put considerable emphasis, energy and resources to working collaboratively with property owners to address any questions or concerns,” said Karpa. “Now that the notices are mailed, we encourage all property owners to use the Customer Review Period to check, review and compare their assessment and to get their questions answered.” The Customer Review Period runs from
Jan. 3 until March 12.

In conjunction with the 2019 assessment notice mailing The City has updated the Assessment Search website at calgary.ca/assessmentsearch with 2019 assessment information. Through the Assessment Search secure login service, property owners can conduct more in-depth research by accessing detailed information on their own property, summary information on other properties or premises for comparison purposes, helpful search tools, and account management features.

New this year, property owners can sign up online to view future assessment notices electronically.

“We continue to enhance the information and services we offer online so customers can efficiently and conveniently access tools and resources to conduct their assessment review,” said Karpa. Information about registering for and using the Assessment Search secure login service and eNotices are included with the 2019 notice mailing and online at calgary.ca/assessmentsearch.

If customers still have questions after reviewing their assessment, they can call Assessment at 403-268-2888 during the 2019 Customer Review Period to have their inquiries answered over the phone or, if necessary, to book an appointment with an assessor.
