Robbery suspect arrested and charged

A suspect believed responsible for robbing at least nine people in downtown Calgary has been arrested as a direct result of information from the public that identified him and led to his apprehension.

Following the release of several high-quality CCTV images on Monday, May 17, 2021, the potential suspect was identified, along with his residence in the 1000 block of Seventh Avenue S.W. The suspect was not home when officers went to speak to him and officers held continuity on the residence while awaiting judicial authorization for a search warrant. On Tuesday, May 18, 2021, the search warrant was executed and several evidentiary items were seized that confirmed the suspect was in fact connected to the robberies.

Later that afternoon, police received a report of a suspicious male who looked similar to the suspect depicted in the media. Officers responded to the area and were able to affect an arrest. Several other items were seized at the time of the arrest connecting him to the robberies.

Ryan Sami HENNICHE, 20, has been charged with robbery (in connection to an incident on Tuesday, May 11, 2021), illegal use of credit card, and breach of a release order. He will next appear in court on Thursday, May 20, 2021.

The investigation into the evidence seized and the additional reported robberies is ongoing and further charges are expected to be laid.

“We acknowledge the impact these robberies had on many of our citizens in the core. This type of violence will not be tolerated by us, or by fellow citizens. Several resources were dedicated to the swift apprehension of this suspect, in conjunction with members of our community who came forward to provide information critical to identification and subsequent apprehension. Thank you to the public and the media for your assistance in this case. We are all Calgarians working together to ensure a bright, vibrant future for our community,” says District 1 Inspector Clare Smart.

Police investigating downtown robberies

We are investigating a series of personal robberies that have taken place over the past two days.

On Monday, May 10 and Tuesday, May 11, 2021, six personal robberies reportedly took place in Calgary’s downtown core. All the robberies took place between 2 and 10:30 p.m. on both days.

In each instance, a man approaches a female victim, shows a knife, and then robs the victim of cash, their wallet or their purse. The majority of the robberies have taken place on the downtown LRT platforms or along 8th Avenue S.W., with one incident in the Beltline near 12 Avenue and 11 Street S.W.

The man involved is described as being of average height with a slim build. In each incident, he was wearing dark clothing, had his head covered, and was wearing a surgical mask or red bandana over his face.

We are actively investigating these incidents. Although no one has been injured, we want to make citizens aware.

If you are approached by this individual, please call 911 for police assistance.
