Police recover stolen Chevrolet Chevelle

The Calgary Police Service has recovered a classic car that was stolen in October 2018 from northwest Calgary.

The vehicle, a blue 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle, was stolen sometime between 1 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 28, 2018, and 7:30 a.m., on Monday, Oct. 29, 2018, from outside a business located in the 100 block of Crowfoot Way N.W.

At that time, investigators sought public assistance to locate the vehicle and as a result, received numerous tips.

On Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, patrol officers from District 4 recovered the stolen Chevelle in a garage located in the 3000 block of Dover Road S.E., with assistance from Auto Theft Team investigators. It is believed that the garage had been rented for the purpose of hiding the stolen vehicle.

At the time of recovery, investigators also located a stolen 2019 Cargo Mate Utility Trailer which had been taken from a parking lot located in the 3200 block of 10 Street S.E., on Wednesday, Nov. 28, 2018. The trailer was purchased only a couple of hours prior to it being stolen.

“It is likely that thieves were preparing to use the trailer to transport the Chevelle out of Calgary when our officers recovered it,” says Staff Sergeant Graeme Smiley of the CPS District Support Unit. “Assistance from the public is crucial in recovering stolen vehicles. Anyone who rents out their garage, parking space or property for people to store vehicles needs to be aware of what is being stored on their property and needs to do their due diligence to ensure the vehicles they are storing aren’t stolen.”

Citizens can check if a vehicle is listed as stolen by obtaining the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) and searching the Canadian Police Information Centre’s database of stolen vehicles. If property owners or neighbours suspect that vehicles they are storing may be stolen, they should contact police by calling 403-266-1234 or report it anonymously through Crime Stoppers.

While en route to recover the Chevelle, a detective from the Auto Theft Team also located and recovered the dash of a Dodge Ram 2500, which was being transported in the back of a pickup truck near where the Chevelle was recovered. The vehicle that the dash was taken out of was stolen sometime between Saturday, Dec. 22, 2018, and Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, from a parking lot located in the 2600 block of 58 Avenue S.E. At this time there is no indication that this theft is related to the theft of the trailer and Chevelle.

The Chevrolet Chevelle was recovered with damage to the trunk, steering wheel and dash. The stolen trailer was recovered with minimal damage.

The investigation into the three thefts remains ongoing at this time.

Anyone with information about the theft of the Chevrolet Chevelle, Cargo Mate Utility Trailer or the Dodge Truck is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers anonymously through either of the following methods:
