Police lay 33 charges in seizure of drugs and firearms

As the result of an extensive, collaborative investigation, a man and a woman are facing more than 33 charges combined, and police have seized $169,000 worth of drugs, firearms and various contraband.

In June 2022, investigators discovered that a Calgary man and woman were believed to be trafficking drugs while residing at various residences and hotels in the northeast quadrant of the city. Over the next two months, police executed various search warrants for a storage locker being used by the suspects, as well as a vehicle and a hotel room.

On Thursday, Aug. 4, 2022, police located and arrested the man and woman in the area of 26 Street and 33 Avenue N.E.

In total, police seized:

  • A 12-gauge shotgun, a SKS riffle, a .22 riffle, crossbows, knives, ammunition, cutting agents, scales, various stolen property, stolen drivers’ licences, and other stolen identification.
  • 1.1 kilograms of methamphetamine, and 472 grams of fentanyl.

As a result, Darcey Garnet ZELMER, 37, is charged with:

·       Five counts of possession of a firearm contrary to order

·       14 counts of break of a release order

·       Two counts of possession of a firearm with ammunition

·       Four counts of possession of a firearm without a license

·       One count of hazardous storage of a firearm

·       Two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking

·       One count of possession of proceeds obtained by crime

ZELMER remains in custody and will next appear in court on Friday, Aug. 12, 2022.

Natalya Ann NILES, 22, is charged with:

·       Two counts of break of a release order

·       Two counts of possession of a controlled substance for the purpose of trafficking

NILES appeared in court on Monday, Aug. 8, 2022.

“Multiple resources from within the Calgary Police Service came together to address a significant public safety concern by successfully removing drugs and weapons from our streets,” says Staff Sergeant Colin Chisholm of the Calgary Police Service General Investigations Unit.
