Police investigate homicide in the northwest - Update

The victim of a fatal shooting that occurred last weekend has been identified.

At approximately 2:21 p.m., Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023, police were called for reports of shots fired outside of the south entrance of Market Mall located at 3412 49 Street N.W. in the parking lot.

Upon arrival, first responders located a man in medical distress. He was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition where he was declared deceased.

Upon completion of an autopsy earlier today by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the victim has been identified as Danny TRUONG, 23, of Calgary.

This marks the 12th homicide for Calgary this year.

“It is extremely concerning that such a brazen and unnecessary act of violence occurred in the middle of the afternoon in a public space, endangering Calgarians who were going about their day,” says Acting Staff Sergeant Lee Treit of the Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit. “We believe this is a targeted incident, and that there is no outstanding risk to the public. We are asking anyone who may have information about this incident to contact police immediately.”

Anyone who was in the area of Market Mall at approximately 2:19 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 12, 2023, who may have dash cam video is asked to contact police.

Police are also asking anyone who may have dash cam video in the area of the Side Street Pub and Grill located at 1167 Kensington Crescent N.W. between 2 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 9 and 12 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 10, 2023, to contact police. The pub is not in any way associated or connected with this incident. Investigators believe the white Volvo was stolen from outside of the pub, and are looking for anyone who may have been in the area or witnessed anything suspicious to contact police.

This incident is not connected to the shooting that occurred at Deerfoot City over the weekend.
