Police investigate fatal collision in Highfield

Our Traffic Section continues to investigate a fatal collision that occurred yesterday afternoon.

At approximately noon, on Sunday, Sept. 8, 2024, a single-vehicle collision occurred in the southbound lane on Highfield Road S.E.

At the time, a black 2017 Toyota Rav 4, driven by a 35-year-old man, with a 33-year-old woman as a passenger, was travelling southbound approaching the 3400 block of Highfield Road S.E.

As the vehicle continued south, the road curved and the vehicle crossed onto the west shoulder and entered a large gravel parking area. The vehicle continued straight, travelling on the gravel, before crossing into the rough vegetation area to the west of the road.

The Toyota then struck a large metal pole which was part of an advertising installation. The impact caused the Toyota to rotate around the pole before coming to a final rest on its roof.

The passenger was pronounced deceased at scene and the driver was transported to hospital in serious condition.

At this time, speed, alcohol, or drugs are not believed to be factors in this collision.
