Next phase of 17 Ave. S.W. Reconstruction Project set to begin

CALGARY – After pausing construction during the Calgary Flames playoff run, crews are now beginning road and utility construction on 17 Ave. S.W. It’s the last season for this work on the Avenue.

“Our focus is to get the work done and be off the Avenue as soon as possible this year,” says Peter Rudolf, Project Manager for 17 Ave. S.W. “Come mid-May, we’ll have two zones closed between 9 St. and 14 St., and multiple crews working to make sure we meet our 2019 completion.”

The first phase of construction begins today, between 8 St. and 10A St. S.W., with local detours in place, to keep people close to the Avenue. Later in May, one-ways on 14 and 15 Ave. S.W. will extend to 12 St. S.W. Sixteenth Avenue, between 10 St. and 14 St. S.W., will also be converted to a two-way.

“While we’re focusing on getting the work done, we’re also making sure the Avenue stays open for people to enjoy the area. We’re keeping all sidewalks and accesses open to businesses, retailers and restaurants,” says Peter. “We encourage Calgarians to come and enjoy 17 Ave. S.W. and the area over the spring and summer.”

To date, over 65 per cent of work on 17 Ave. S.W. has been completed, including new utility, road and electrical infrastructure, as well as pedestrian realm improvements like new sidewalks, streetlights, and new trees. Highlights include 4,006 square meters of new sidewalks, 2,044 meters of new water main and 28,721 square meters of new road asphalt.

Calgarians will move easier this year, with 17 Ave. S. and several other transportation infrastructure projects scheduled to be completed in 2019: Glenmore Trail, Anderson Road and Bow Trail widenings, five pedestrian bridge projects, upgrades to Crowchild Trail over the Bow river, and the Southwest BRT.
