Man charged with copper wire theft

We have charged one man with break-and-enter and theft-related offences after he was found to be in possession of stolen copper wire.

At about 6:55 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 11, 2024, we received a call about a theft in progress in northwest Calgary. A private security company that was hired to monitor two construction sites in the community of Rockland Park had been alerted to unauthorized activity on the sites. When the company determined that copper wire had been stolen from the sites, they reported the theft to police and advised that they were monitoring the location of the wire through a live tracker.

The use of the tracker alerted police to the suspect’s location.

Police located and arrested the suspect at approximately 7:30 a.m., as he exited Rona located at 90 Crowfoot Way N.W. Upon his arrest, the suspect was found to be in possession of additional stolen property believed to be from both Rona and Home Depot, and to be in violation of a driving prohibition.

As a result of the investigation, Jarod Michael SHAMBEL, 36, has been charged with:

  • Two counts of break and enter – shop or commercial
  • One count of theft (shoplifting) under $5,000
  • Two counts of mischief – destroying or damaging property
  • One count of possession of break-in instruments
  • One count of possession of locally stolen property under $5,000
  • One count of failure to comply with a release order
  • One count of driving while disqualified or prohibited
  • One count of driving an uninsured motor vehicle on a highway
  • One count of operating an unregistered motor vehicle
  • One count of displaying an unauthorized licence plate
  • One count of failure to carry proof of ownership of a vehicle

SHAMBEL is scheduled to appear in court on Thursday, Nov. 21, 2024.
