Man charged in serious-injury hit-and-run

We’ve charged a Calgary man who is believed to be responsible for a hit-and-run collision that has left a woman with life-altering injuries.

At approximately 7:35 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 19, 2023, police were called to the area of 52 Street and 61 Avenue S.E., for reports of a hit-and-run collision involving a pedestrian and a motorist.

The pedestrian, a woman in her 40s, was struck by a truck while she was crossing 52 Street at 61 Avenue S.E. The truck failed to remain at the scene.

The woman was transported to hospital with serious injuries.

On February 2, 2023, we released CCTV footage of the vehicle believed to be involved in the incident. We can now confirm the vehicle captured in the CCTV footage was being driven by the suspect, who has since been arrested and charged.

As a result, Albert Barbosa BETONIO, 47, has been charged with one count of failing to stop at the scene of an accident, and one count of failing to stop at the scene of an accident causing bodily harm.

BETONIO is scheduled to appear in court today, Wednesday, May 10, 2023.
