Investigative task force concludes formal investigation

The task force investigating the Falconridge/Castleridge violent incident in September 2023 has concluded the formal investigation.

The investigative task force was stood up days after the violent conflict occurred, with the goal of identifying persons of interest and charging individuals responsible for the violence and property damage that resulted from the violent conflict on Saturday, Sept. 2, 2023.

In addition to the individuals previously identified, the following individual has also been charged:

Rusom Tesfamikael TES, 50, of Calgary, has been charged with rioting and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

These charges conclude the formal commitment of the task force. If additional information arises and it is deemed appropriate, further charges may still occur.

In total, 28 individuals have been charged and 63 charges have been laid. Charges include rioting, assault with a weapon and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

“Over the course of four and a half months, our members have worked relentlessly to identify individuals involved in one of Calgary’s largest violent incidents. We have not lost sight of our goal – holding involved individuals accountable,” says Calgary Police Service Chief Constable Mark Neufeld.

“Our service and community will not tolerate incidents such as this where senseless violence and property damage is the result. Similar incidents have occurred in other jurisdictions in Canada and beyond. At this point, we are the only Canadian police agency to have laid rioting charges against those who participated.

“I want to thank members of the media and Calgarians who came forward with information and supported our investigation. I also want to thank our members, many who put themselves directly in harm’s way to keep the peace and reduce the impact this conflict had in our community.”
