Heritage Day long weekend road closures: What you need to know

Motorists are being advised of the following road/lane closures during the Heritage Day long weekend, from Friday, Aug. 2 to Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2019. (Updated Aug. 8, 2019)

Southwest closures

Crowchild Tr. fly-over: One lane closed

From 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2, to 5 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 6, the Crowchild Tr. fly-over, to eastbound Glenmore Tr. from southbound Crowchild Tr., will be reduced to one lane. This lane closure is necessary for concrete barrier work. Major delays are expected in the southbound direction on Crowchild Tr.
- Alternate north-south routes: Elbow Dr., Macleod Tr., and Deerfoot Tr.Alternate east-west routes: Glenmore Tr., east of Crowchild Tr.; Heritage Dr.; Anderson Rd.

14 St. S.W. lane closures

Northbound 14 St. S.W., between Heritage Dr. and 75 Ave. S.W., will only have two lanes open, from Aug. 3 to Aug. 6, daily, for street light work:

Friday, Aug. 2: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (non-peak rush hour direction)
Saturday, Aug. 3, to Monday, Aug. 5: 7 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Tuesday, Aug. 6: 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. (non-peak rush hour direction)

Southbound 14 St. S.W., at 90 Ave. S.W., will only have two lanes open on Saturday. Aug. 3, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., for utility and underpass work:

Saturday, Aug. 3, to Monday, Aug. 5: 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Macleod Tr. ramp

Starting Thursday, Aug. 1 at 9 p.m. until Friday, Aug. 2 at 5 a.m., there will be a ramp closure on southbound Macleod Tr. to Shawville Blvd S.W. This closure accommodates paving.

Crowchild Tr. access from 54 Ave. S.W.

The access to Crowchild Tr. from westbound 54 Ave. S.W. will be closed from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 2 and 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 for bridge work related to the Glenmore Trail Widening Project. Traffic will be detoured to 50 Ave. S.W. via 21 St. S.W. to bypass the closure.

77 St. S.W.

Starting Friday, Aug. 2 at 9:30 a.m. until Monday, Aug. 5 at 5 a.m., there will be a road closure on 77 St. at Spring Valley View S.W. This closure accommodates service tie-in. Please use alternate routes provided.

11 Ave. S.W.

On Sunday, Aug. 3 from 7 a.m. until 12 p.m., there will be reduced lanes on 11 Ave. S.W. between 12 St. and 13 St. S.W. This closure accommodates a crane lift.

Northwest/Southwest closures

Crowchild Tr. upgrades

Friday, Aug. 2:
- 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.: A single lane closure along northbound Crowchild Tr. to westbound 5 Ave. N.W.
- 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.: A single lane closure along eastbound Memorial Dr./Parkdale Blvd.
- 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.: A single lane closure along eastbound Bow Tr.
- 10 p.m. Friday until 8 a.m. Saturday: FULL CLOSURE of the eastbound Memorial Dr./Parkdale Blvd. to southbound Crowchild Tr. ramp
- 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Saturday: FULL CLOSURE of the southbound Crowchild Tr. to 12 Ave S.W. East (via 10 Ave S.W.) ramp

Saturday, Aug. 3:
- 7 a.m. – 3 p.m.: A single lane closure along northbound Crowchild Tr. to westbound 5 Ave. N.W.

Beginning Tuesday, Aug. 6 and ongoing until September: Watch for increased activity at the Crowchild Tr. & Kensington Rd. N.W. intersection including:
- Single lane daytime closures along Crowchild Tr. (on either side of the Crowchild & Kensington intersection)
- Single lane closures along Kensington Rd. (on either side of the Crowchild & Kensington intersection)
- Nighttime work – we’ll stage the noisiest work as early in the evenings as possible
- Installation and activation of new permanent traffic lights
- On-site signage to help direct those who walk, cycle, drive and take transit in the area

Nightly from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.:
- Single and double lane closures along northbound and southbound Crowchild Tr. (between Bow Tr. and 5 Ave. N.W.)
- Single lane closures along 10 Ave. S.W. (under Crowchild Tr.)
- Single and double lane closures along eastbound Bow Tr. (over Crowchild Tr.)
- An increase in activity at the intersection of Bow Tr. & 10 Ave. S.W. (for signals work)
- Continued activity at the intersection of Crowchild Tr. & 5 Ave. N.W.

Northeast closures

Memorial Dr. N.E.

From 6 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 until 5 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, there will be reduced lanes and two way traffic on south side of Memorial Dr. N.E. between 36 St. and 44 St. N.E. This closure accommodates water services.

Southeast closures

Macleod Tr.

From 8 p.m. Friday Aug. 2 until 5 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 6, crews will be working to upgrade aging utilities underneath Macleod Tr. S.E. Macleod Tr. will be reduced to one northbound lane between 17 Ave. and 14 Ave. S.E. with access to 17 Ave. S.W. Motorists are advised to use alternate routes during this closure.

162 Ave. S.E. interchange

As part of the final completion of the Macleod Tr. and 162 Ave. S. interchange, crews have been working on night-time top lift asphalt paving on the interchange and will continue until Aug. 3. The interchange itself will be closed during the night starting at 9 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 3, until 5 a.m. on Sunday, Aug. 4. We are working with Calgary Police Service to ensure that all emergency services are maintained during this time.

4 Ave. S.E.

From 6 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 3 until 5 a.m. Monday, Aug. 5, there will be reduced lanes on 4 Ave. S.E. at MacLeod Tr. This closure accommodates water works. Motorists are to expect delays through the area.

Special event road closures

Chasing Summer - Saturday, Aug. 3 to Monday, Aug. 5 daily from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Barlow Tr. will be closed between Memorial Dr. S.E. and 17 Ave. S.E. between 11 a.m. and 1 a.m. daily
The right lane of the exit ramp from eastbound Memorial Dr. S.E. to Barlow Tr. S.E. will be closed between 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. daily to accommodate a taxi zone
The exit ramp will be completely closed to all traffic except taxis between 8 p.m. and 1 a.m. daily
Speeds on westbound Memorial Dr. S.E. will be restricted to 60 km/h during the event
Watch for Police directing traffic in the area

Inglewood Sunfest – Saturday, Aug. 3 from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m.

9 Ave. S.E. will be closed from 11 St. to 14 St. S.E.
12 St. and 13 St. S.E. will be closed north and south of 9 Ave. S.E. with local traffic only
There will be restricted parking on 8 Ave. S.E. between 11 St. and 14 St. S.E.
11 St., 12 St., 13 St. and 14 St. S.E. will have restricted parking between 8 and 10 Ave. S.E.
Marshals and Police will be directing traffic in the area
Motorists are advised to drive with caution, watch for cyclists and pedestrians and avoid the area by use alternate routes

Tour De Bowness Hill Climb – Sunday, Aug. 4 from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Parking restrictions will be in place on Mackay Rd. N.W. from Montalban Cres. to 42 St. N.W.
Mackay Rd. N.W. will be reduced to single lanes northbound and southbound to accommodate climbers
Motorists are advised to drive with caution, watch for pedestrians and avoid the area by using alternate routes

Bow Cycle Tour de Bowness and Street Festival – Monday, Aug. 5 from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Bowness Rd. N.W. will be closed between 62 St. and 66 Ave. N.W.
Bowwood Dr. N.W. will be closed between 63 St. and 66 Ave. N.W.
36 Ave. N.W. will be closed at Bow Anne Rd. N.W.
63 Ave. N.W. will be closed between Bowness Rd. and Bow Cres. N.W.
64 St. will be closed between Bowness Rd. and Bow Cres. N.W.
65 St. N.W. will be closed between Bowness Rd. and Bow Cres. N.W.

Restricted parking will be in place along Bowwood Dr., Bowness Rd. and Bow Cres. N.W. and the corresponding streets
There will be marshals and police present to direct traffic
Vehicle detour will be indicated via signage along Bow Cres. N.W.
Motorists are advised to drive with caution, watch for cyclists and pedestrians and avoid the area by use alternate routes
