Fatal stabbing connected to assisted living residence

The investigation continues into a fatal stabbing that occurred early Friday morning.

At approximately 2:45 a.m., on Friday, Oct. 25, 2019, police were called to an assisted living residence in the 1800 block of 27 Avenue S.W., after a woman was stabbed. Emergency crews immediately provided first aid to the victim, but she succumbed to her injuries.

The woman was a professional case worker supporting a man at his assisted living residence. At some point before the incident, it is believed that a verbal and physical confrontation occurred between the man and his case worker, during which the woman was stabbed.

Police could not locate the 18-year-old man at the assisted living residence after the incident. However, Patrol officers located and arrested him around 5 a.m., in the downtown core.

The suspect remains in custody and cannot be identified until formal charges are laid.

The victim has been identified as 47-year-old Deborah ONWU, of Calgary.

As this incident involves a person in their workplace, Alberta Occupational Health and Safety are also investigating. Their investigation will examine workplace safety protocols at the residence.
