Early Morning Building Fire in Ramsay
On June 30th, 2024, at approximately 2:30 AM the Calgary Fire Department was called for reports of a fire in the southeast community of Ramsay. On arrival at the 1100 block of 12th Street SE crews found smoke and flame visible from the outside of a single-story commercial pub/restaurant. Fire crews immediately attacked flames on the outside of the building while preparing to enter the occupancy. Once forcing entry into the building, interior conditions revealed that there was full fire involvement throughout the interior and fire had quickly spread to the roof area causing partial collapse.
Firefighters immediately set up large flow streams to contain and confine the fire to the building of origin as there were adjacent structures and limited access to the south side. Crews utilized hose lines, aerial master streams and truck mounted nozzles to contain the fire. Assistance from Calgary Police kept road access secure to allow for safe operations. Firefighters were forced to work cautiously around downed overhead powerlines until Enmax was able to terminate the lines and shut down power. Atco Gas was also on scene assisting with utility shut offs.
In approximately 2 hours and 30 minutes crews brought the fire completely under control and it is estimated that the fire attack utilized nearly 1.2 million litres of water. The initial attack required over 30 firefighters and 13 apparatus.
While firefighters were unable to enter and search the structure, it is not expected that the structure had any occupants at the time of the fire. Investigators are on scene working to determine the cause and origin of the fire, and crews will be on scene for quite some time. Traffic on 12th Street will be impacted throughout the day.
