Death in custody

The Alberta Serious Incident Response team has been called in to investigate a death in custody that occurred earlier today in Calgary.

At approximately 3:40 a.m., this morning, Wednesday, May 1, 2019, police were called to a hit and run pedestrian collision that occurred in the intersection of McKnight Boulevard and 52 Street N.E. The pedestrian was transported to hospital with life-threating injuries.

A short time later, officers located a suspect vehicle in the vicinity of 68 Street and 32 Avenue N.E. Officers attempted to arrest the driver and a struggle ensued. Immediately upon arrest, the driver appeared to go into medical distress and was subsequently transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased. The cause of death is not known at this time.

As is standard procedure with a death in custody, ASIRT are now investigating and no further information is available at this time.

Road closures are expected to remain in effect for both scenes for some time.
