Charges laid in fatal stabbing

The Calgary Police Service has laid charges in the homicide of Deborah ONWU.

At approximately 2:45 a.m., on Friday, Oct. 25, 2019, police were called to an assisted living residence in the 1800 block of 27 Avenue S.W., for reports that a woman had been stabbed. Emergency crews immediately provided first aid to the victim, but she succumbed to her injuries.

The woman, later identified as ONWU, was a professional case worker supporting a man at his assisted living residence. At some point before the incident, it is believed that a verbal and physical confrontation occurred between the man and ONWU, during which ONWU was stabbed.

Brandon Jacob Spencer NEWMAN, 18, of Calgary, is charged with second degree murder in connection with this incident. He remains in custody and will next appear in court on Friday, Nov. 1, 2019.
