Charges laid in 2024 fatal hit-and-run pedestrian collision

We have charged a Calgary man in relation to a fatal hit-and-run pedestrian collision that occurred in the community of Forest Heights in May last year.

At approximately 12:20 a.m., on Saturday, May 18, 2024, a man in his 70s was walking north along 47 Street S.E. in a marked crosswalk, crossing Memorial Drive S.E.

At the same time, a black BMW X5 was travelling east along Memorial Drive S.E. approaching 47 Street S.E., and struck the man, who was ultimately declared deceased at the scene.

The driver fled prior to police arrival and continued travelling east before abandoning the vehicle. Police located the vehicle a short time later.

Following a lengthy investigation by our Traffic Unit, with assistance from other areas within the Calgary Police Service, officers made an arrest on Wednesday, March 12, 2025.

As a result, Muhammad Rayyan ARSHAD, 24, of Calgary, has been charged with one count each of hit-and-run and hit-and-run causing death.

He is scheduled to appear in court today, Thursday, March 13, 2025.

ARSHAD was the driver of the black BMW X5. Police are still looking to identify the driver of the white sedan that is believed to have been travelling beside the black BMW during the time of the incident. Police believe the driver of the white sedan may have important information relating to the investigation.
