Calgary Fire Responds to Basement Fire in Penbrooke Meadows

On September 13, 2022 at approximately 2:45AM the Calgary Fire Department (CFD) responded to the 100 block of Pennsburg Way in the southeast community of Penbrooke Meadows.  On arrival firefighters encountered heavy smoke issuing from the front door of a single story detached residential dwelling. The occupants of the home had self-evacuated and met incoming crews in the front yard.  Firefighters pushed through zero visibility conditions and high heat to locate the seat of the fire in a basement room.  The fire was quickly extinguished as crews simultaneously searched the home and determined that all occupants had safely escaped.  In all, 2 adults and 7 children escaped the fire.

The fire caused significant heat and smoke damage throughout the home and all occupants will be displaced.  There were no reported injuries to occupants or firefighters on scene.  ATCO and Enmax were on scene shutting off utilities to the home, and Calgary Police assisted with perimeter control.

Fire crews will be on scene for several hours extinguishing hot spots and assisting the fire investigator.  The cause of the fire is being investigated.  The CFD would like to remind Calgarians of the importance of working smoke alarms and having an escape plan for your home.  Working smoke alarms save lives.
