ASIRT investigating officer-involved shooting

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating following an officer-involved shooting late yesterday evening.

Around 11:30 p.m., on Monday, Sept. 24, 2018, Calgary Police Service District 5 members observed a stolen pick-up truck in the area of 64 Avenue and 68 Street N.E.

While attempting to conduct a traffic stop on the vehicle, a confrontation occurred between the driver of the vehicle and police, resulting in the stolen vehicle colliding with both the police vehicle and a home in the 100 block of Martinwood Court N.E., and the discharge of a firearm by a CPS officer. No one is believed to have been injured as a result of the shooting.

The vehicle fled the area, driving erratically and at times steering into oncoming traffic.

During this time, the suspect vehicle was involved in a minor collision with another vehicle around Barlow Trail and 25 Avenue N.E. Police are asking the driver of this vehicle to come forward and call police as they left the area before officers could arrive.

Several minutes later, the driver of the stolen vehicle lost control, and slammed into another house, this time in the 400 block of 32 Avenue N.W. Force was used, including the use of a Canine Unit police service dog, to contain and take the driver into custody.

The lone occupant of the vehicle was taken into custody and was transported to hospital with injuries believed to have been unrelated to the officer’s discharge of his firearm.

Fortunately, no members of the public or officers were injured as a result of this incident.

The subject officer is now on a 30-day administrative leave, as per policy.

ASIRT has been directed to investigate the circumstances surrounding the arrest and discharge of firearm. CPS has responsibility for the continuing investigation into the possible criminal conduct of the driver of the vehicle.
