Additional witnesses sought in fatal shooting investigation

Homicide investigators are looking to speak to the drivers of two vehicles who were in the area at the time of the fatal shooting of Merke Mehreteab MERKE.

Around 7:10 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 22, 2021, police were called to the 200 block of 28 Street S.E., for reports that a man was found seriously injured. The man was declared deceased on scene. The victim was later identified as Merke Mehreteab MERKE, 25, of Calgary, who had recently moved from Edmonton.

After reviewing video from the area, investigators have identified two vehicles that were in the area at the time of the homicide – a blue Buick Encore and a grey Nissan Pathfinder. The drivers of the vehicles may have information that could assist investigators. Stock photos of the vehicles are available on The City of Calgary Newsroom.

“We have combed through hours and hours of video footage and identified the drivers of these vehicles as potential witnesses,” says Staff Sergeant Martin Schiavetta of the CPS Homicide Unit. “We believe that this was a planned and targeted attack and it’s extremely likely that someone in the area may have unknowingly witnessed the suspects or other suspicious behaviour.”

Anyone who was driving one of these vehicles in the area of Short Pants Plaza, located in the 200 block of 28 Street S.E., on Monday, Nov. 22, 2021, or believes they may know who the drivers were, is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234.
