Victim identified in fatal shooting

The name of a man who was targeted in a fatal shooting is being released and investigators are continuing to ask the public for information to help identify suspects.

Around 7:10 p.m., on Monday, Nov. 22, 2021, police were called to the 200 block of 28 Street S.E., for reports that a man was found seriously injured. The man was declared deceased on scene.

An autopsy was completed by The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the victim has been identified as Merke Mehreteab MERKE, 25, of Calgary and Edmonton. MERKE recently moved from Edmonton to Calgary.

Detectives have been canvasing the area for CCTV, however, are still seeking any dashcam video from vehicles that were travelling in the area at the time of the shooting. It is believed that the suspect(s) fled in a vehicle onto eastbound or westbound Memorial Drive. Any motorists with dashcam footage from Memorial Drive between Deerfoot Trail and 36 Street, on Monday, Nov. 22, 2021, between 6:30 and 7 p.m., is asked to contact police.

“To date, we have received very little information from the public in relation to this investigation,” says Staff Sergeant Martin Schiavetta of the CPS Homicide Unit. “Sometimes people might not realize how valuable the information they have is to our investigators, but even the smallest piece of information can be a break in the case for us. Even if you have dashcam video from the area and think there is nothing relevant on it, we are asking you to contact our investigators so they can have a look.”

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers through any of the following methods:
