Seeking public assistance in extortion investigation

The Calgary Police Service is seeking public assistance to identify a man in relation to an extortion investigation.

On Monday, Jan. 1, 2018, at approximately 4 p.m., a woman was on a southbound CTrain, which was approaching Southland Station. As the CTrain stopped, an unknown man walked past the woman, grabbed her phone and exited the CTrain. The woman chased after the man and asked for her phone back. The man refused and told the woman she needed to pay him in order to get her phone back.

The man and woman then walked to a bank that was located near the CTrain station, where the woman withdrew cash and gave it to the man. The man then returned the victim’s phone and fled the area.

The woman continued on her way home and then contacted police.

The man is described as Caucasian, and was wearing a black jacket, a black hat with a white logo on it and sunglasses. He was wearing dark pants and light brown boots. Photos of the man are available on The City of Calgary Newsroom.
