Police investigate arson in Mount Pleasant

The Calgary Police Service is investigating a suspected arson that occurred earlier this week in the community of Mount Pleasant.

At approximately 3:15 a.m., on Tuesday, Aug. 30, 2016, the Calgary Fire Department was called to a residential fire in the 400 block of 30 Avenue N.W. Firefighters arrived to find a two-storey house, that was still under construction, fully engulfed in flames. No one was injured in the fire, but the house was a total loss.

The Calgary Police Service Arson Unit and fire investigators now believe that the fire was started intentionally.

Investigators have found CCTV footage from a business near the house that shows a person dressed in dark clothing and riding a bicycle in the area when the fire started. The person later returned to the burning house and was last seen travelling north along 4 Street N.W.

The fire was not reported to 9-1-1 until approximately half an hour later.

Police are asking for the public’s help to identify this person of interest as it is believed they may have information about the fire.

Anyone with information on this fire is asked to call the Calgary Police Service non-emergency line at 403-266-1234 or Crime Stoppers anonymously using any of the following methods:
