Youth charged with second-degree murder

The Calgary Police Service Homicide Unit has charged a 16-year-old boy in the death of a woman on Tuesday.

Police were called to a residence in the 1800 block of 42 Street S.E., just after 11 p.m., Tuesday, May 31, 2016, for reports of a woman in medical distress. Upon arrival they found a woman in her 30s with injuries. She was transported to hospital in life-threatening condition where she later died as a result of her injuries.

An autopsy was completed yesterday, Wednesday, June 1, 2016, and confirmed the 33-year-old woman died as a result of a stabbing.

The victim is the common-law stepmother of the accused. Under the provisions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, the accused cannot be identified. As such, the victim cannot be named as it could identify the youth accused in this matter.

Investigators believe a number of family members and friends had gathered at the house for a get-together. Alcohol was consumed and a dispute allegedly broke out that led to an altercation between the victim and the accused.

Three people were taken into custody shortly after the incident after being found in the nearby community. Two were released without charges. A 16-year-old boy has been charged with second-degree murder. He will next appear in court today, Thursday, June 2, 2016.

This is Calgary’s 10th homicide of 2016.
