Woman charged with manslaughter following fatal altercation
A woman has been charged with manslaughter following a suspicious death downtown in March.
At approximately 8 a.m., on Thursday, March 13, 2025, staff arriving for their shift at a building located in the 900 block of Seventh Avenue S.W., located a security guard nearby who appeared to be in medical distress. The staff called EMS, who transported the man to hospital in serious condition.
After reviewing CCTV, it is believed that earlier that morning, a woman had entered the building to take the packages left in the lobby. The security guard intervened, trying to retrieve the packages while asking her to leave. The woman then pushed the man, causing him to fall back hitting his head on the ground. The woman then proceeded into the office area where it is believed she stole a laptop and other items in the office.
A photo of the woman from the CCTV was circulated to District 1 members, and a short time later she was located and taken into custody.
Sadly, on Friday, March 14, 2025, the man died in hospital. A preliminary autopsy was completed on Monday, March 17, 2025, and it was determined additional tests were required, which are ongoing. The victim has been identified as George FERNANDEZ, 73, of Calgary.
Amanda Robyn AHENAKEW, 45, has been charged with manslaughter in relation to this death. She will next appear in court on Wednesday, April 16, 2025.
