Witnesses sought in downtown fatal stabbing
Our Homicide Unit is continuing to investigate a fight that resulted in the death of one man and the injury of multiple others.
At approximately 1:55 a.m., we were called to the 700 block of 10 Avenue S.W., for reports of a fight that had broken out in a parking lot outside of Commonwealth Bar & Stage. Upon arrival, officers located a victim suffering from stab wounds, along with two other victims suffering from injuries. One victim, a 21-year-old man, was transported to hospital by EMS but was tragically declared deceased upon arrival at the hospital. The second victim remains in hospital in stable condition and the third victim has since been released.
Immediately following the incident, officers from across the Service flooded the area and located four suspects in the downtown area. These suspects remain in custody pending further investigation.
Investigators believe that numerous witnesses were present when the fight broke out and have information that multiple witnesses may have filmed the incident on their cell phones.
Detectives have spoken with over a dozen witnesses so far and are asking anyone else who witnessed the incident or has cellphone or dashcam footage from the area to contact police. Investigators are specifically looking for one potential witness, who left the area in a dark-coloured Tesla. This witness is not believed to have been involved in the confrontation.
“Our investigators are working tirelessly to piece together the events that led up to this fatal altercation,” says Staff Sgt. Sean Gregson of the CPS Homicide Unit. “It is believed that this was an alcohol-fuelled fight, that tragically took the life of one man. We are committed to finding answers for the victim’s family and are pleading with anyone with information to come forward.”
At this time, the motive for this incident is unknown.
