Weekend suspicious death deemed a homicide

Our Homicide Unit continues to investigate after a man was located deceased in an alley in southeast Calgary.

Police were called at approximately 4:05 p.m., on Sunday, July 14, 2024, for reports of a seriously injured man in the alley behind the 2200 block of 42 Street S.E. Upon EMS arrival, the man was declared deceased.

An autopsy completed earlier today, Wednesday, July 17, 2024, by The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner identified the man as 24-year-old Abdoul Madiou BALDE. His death has been deemed a homicide.

Investigators have canvassed the surrounding area and spoken to nearby residents, however we are still asking witnesses to come forward. In cases like this one, the answers lie within the community, and we are asking anyone with information about this incident, even if the information seems insignificant, to contact police.

“The public plays a crucial role in helping us solve these investigations,” says Staff Sergeant Mark Rahn of the CPS Homicide Unit. “Regardless of if you believe your information isn’t valuable or assume that police already have it, we want you to come forward. Sometimes even the smallest tip can be the piece that solves the puzzle.”

This is Calgary’s ninth homicide of 2024.
