Wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for second-degree murder

As a direct result of a tip provided by a member of the public that helped us identify the alleged suspect, a Canada-wide warrant for second-degree murder has now been issued for Christopher Douglas MATHERS, in the death of Russell YOUNKER.

At approximately 6:20 p.m., on Thursday, April 15, 2021, an altercation occurred between two people on the west side of 11 Street S.W., at the CTrain tracks near the Kerby Centre, during which one man was stabbed. The victim was identified as Russell David YOUNKER, 49, of Calgary.

Several media releases were issued seeking information from the public in relation to several individuals in CCTV photos. A tip from the public assisted investigators in identifying one of the individuals as a potential suspect. Investigators attempted to locate the suspect, only to learn the man had moved out of his residence and potentially left Calgary.

Christopher MATHERS, 34, is believed to have connections in London, Ont., and Halifax, Nova Scotia and British Columbia. He is described as 6’1” tall, approximately 220 pounds, with brown hair and blue eyes. Photos of MATHERS are available on The City of Calgary Newsroom.

It is believed the victim and the accused knew each other and the altercation was a follow up to a previous incident that occurred between the two.

Investigators have spoken with some of the witnesses identified in the CCTV images and believe they were not involved in the altercation. However, they are still looking to speak with a man who was seen wearing a blue hoodie with a red logo on the front, a baseball cap, sunglasses and a backpack. A photo of this witness is available on The City of Calgary Newsroom.

Anyone with information on MATHERS whereabouts is asked to call the Homicide Tip Line at 403-428-8877, or the CPS non-emergency line at 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers through any of the following methods:
